Alabama High School Exit Exam: Adults, 16 years of age or older and not enrolled in high school, who have the high school credits required for a high school diploma may study for the Alabama High School Exit Exam.
back to top Distance Learning : A GED online computer class allows students who cannot attend class to study for the GED test at home. Those who score on the ninth-grade level or above on an assessment test are eligible for the online class. back to top Tutoring: Help is available for nonreaders and beginning readers. Nonreaders and beginning readers may attend reading class, study in a computer reading lab, or be assigned a tutor. back to top GED: GED stands for the General Educational Development test. The test covers five areas: Language Arts, Writing; Social Studies; Science; Language Arts, Reading ; and Mathematics. A free GED practice test to determine readiness for the GED test is available. The high school equivalency diploma is issued on the basis of satisfactory GED test.
To register for the GED you must be at least 16 years old and not enrolled in a public or private school registered with the State Department of Education. The following documents are required to register:
- A current Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, non-driver’s license ID, passport, military ID) and a Social Security card.
- A valid Tax ID number issued by the Social Security Administration is required if you are in this country on a non-work status.
- Applicants 16 or 17 years of age must also have a signed withdrawal form, showing withdrawal date, from the last high school attended AND a NOTARIZED letter from a parent/guardian giving permission to take the GED test.
- A test fee of $50 (cash only) is due at time of registration. If you are a re-tester, the charge is $10 for each area of the test you will be taking.
- ADA accommodations are available.
If you fail to bring the necessary documents or fee with you to registration, you will not be permitted to register. Please be prompt. No one will be admitted once the registration process has started.

Ready to Work: Alabama’s Ready to Work program provides students FREE training in basic skills required by most leading businesses and industries in Alabama.
The Ready to Work curriculum is designed by Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT) to build the skills demanded locally as well as nation-wide by business and industry to support growth in technology and manufacturing.
Successful graduates will receive an Alabama Certified Worker Certificate from AIDT and an Alabama Career readiness Certificate from WorkKeys, which will allow them to successfully compete in today’s competitive job market.
Anyone with a high school diploma or GED qualifies for the Ready to Work Program. The classes are in the Adult Education Department at the Calhoun Community College in the Business Center on the Decatur Campus and the Huntsville Campus on Wynn drive.
The type training will be basic computer skills, workplace behavior, manufacturing, job acquisition, team member skills, and problem solving.
Upon completion of the program, successful trainees may go into further technical training or directly into the workforce.

ESL: English as a second language (ESL) classes provide instruction for adults whose native language is not English. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes are offered on the basis of satisfactory assessment test scores.
