Asclepias tuberosa - Slide #53
This is one of several milkweed species that serve as a food source for Monarch Butterfly caterpillars. The milky sap of the plant contains powerful cardiac glycosides that are poisonous to vertebrate animals like birds that might prey on the caterpillars. Begins blooming in late spring or early summer. |
