Huperzula lucidula - Slide #66

A primitive vascular plant that does not flower at all, but instead produces spores like a fern. I have not seen this plant in Alabama, but similar plants are found throughout various regions of the state. This photo was taken in Great Smoky Mountains National Park where the plant is rather common in places. The plant is evergreen and the areas of smaller leaves visible above are the time of winter growth - they can be used to estimate the age of the plants.
