Dicentra cucullaria - Slide #52
Common in one area along Mountain Fork Creek in northeastern Madison County where this photo was taken. Also occurs with squirrel corn in the Smokys. The seeds of this beautiful little flower are usually planted by ants who are enticed to carry the seeds underground by the presence of a small "fat body" on each seed called an ELAISOME. This fat body is rich in calories and is a favorite of many ant species. |
