A truly spectacular Orchid that is quite rare in Alabama, but has been reported from a few localities including one in Madison County. This photo was taken in Great Smoky Mountains National Park where the plant is quite common. At one spot on the Bud Ogle trail there is a Showy Orchis whose flowers are entirely dark purple - a rare color variant and quite striking.
