Pink Lady's Slipper Orchid

Cypripedium acaule - Slide #35

Not common over much of the state, but it is incredibly abundant in areas of Desoto State Park in northeast Alabama. One area of the park has hundreds of these beautiful orchids clustered together in the most spectacular display I have ever seen! Blooms in late April or early May in North Alabama and it is definitely worth the drive to Desoto to see this remarkable flower. Prefers acid soil conditions and commonly associates with pines and azaleas in much of its range. It does NOT transplant well at all and like all orchids should be left alone where it is!
