A wild relative of our domesticated azaleas and rhododendrons that occurs sporadically in the woods of Alabama. Seems to prefer drier sites, and in optimal localities can be abundant. On one hillside in the Glass Hollow area of Limestone County there were dozens of these shrubs in spectacular bloom in the spring of 1992 - a sight that still stands out in my memory.
