A common early-blooming spring wildflower in the woods of North Alabama and adjacent areas. Smaller than the picture makes it appear, this plant rarely exceeds 5 or 6 inches in height. The plant appears very delicate, but I have seen it in bloom very early in the spring when nights are still bitterly cold - it is evidently tougher than it appears.
