A parasite of tree roots - usually oaks - that is only seen above ground during the spring flowering and fruiting season. Draws all of its nutrition from the host plant and its leaves are reduced to mere scales along the sides of the flowering stalks. Typically occurs in small clumps as seen in the photo.
