View PHOTOS of the Spring 2001 Field Trip to Big Bend National Park. We had a great trip and I think you will enjoy the photos. You can also visit my new personal site on the web - www.doubleduke.com - it's named after my son and myself.

For many years I have taken a Desert Ecology Trip to Big Bend National Park in Texas. See some "Photos" of the trip or learn what we do on the "Trips" page. |
| The "Nature" page is really about four pages in one - national parks, hiking, canoes, and still more wildflowers. This is where I like to visit! |

Duke Report:
| I had a chance to visit the winter home of Thomas Edison on a recent trip to Florida. The home is located in downtown Fort Myers and is easily accessible from Interstate 75. I am working on a page of pictures from the estate that I took with my digital camera. It is an enjoyable tour, but kind of expensive at $12.00 per person. The second largest Banyan Tree in the world grows on the grounds near his laboratory. |

Alabama Gladecress is found only in the state of Alabama on what ecologists refer to as "cedar glades". It blooms in late winter and this photo was sent to me by Steve Threlkeld, a former student now employed by Calhoun Community College. Photo taken near Moulton, AL, March 2003. Steve reports that it is very fragrant and present in large numbers at this site..
Check out my Wildflower Page for pictures of 80 selected southern wildflowers ... more coming soon!

Cool Link of the Month:
| This month, the Cool Link takes us to Eye4U Active Media - a web design company that uses Flash 4.0 to create web sites that are truly stunning. It takes a little while to download, but these folks are really good! |

Biology in the News:
| Lesser Flamingos are dying by the tens of thousands in the Rift Valley of Kenya - home to more than 80% of the world's population of these beautiful, bright pink birds. Carcasses of the dead birds have been analyzed and found to have high concentrations of "heavy metals" in their systems. African scientists believe the major source of the toxic metals is agricultural runoff from nearby farms. |
| Ocelots go crazy for Calvin Klein "Obsession" Cologne in south Texas! Researchers at a small game refuge near Rio Hondo, TX, have been using the fragrant cologne recently to trap some of the 100 small, spotted, Ocelots that inhabit the region - the only place in the US where they occur natively. Apparently the "musk" ingredient of Obsession is a potent attractant for the frisky felines! |

Alabama environmental groups are more active than ever in protecting our natural heritage from mindless exploitation. Check out the web site of Bama Environmental News for more information.

E-Mail Policy:
| I respond rapidly to almost all messages received via e-mail (better than I do to phone calls and snail mail). Some things I will NOT respond to or participate in are "chain letters", unfounded rumors of viruses spreading when you "think" about turning on your computer, and hoaxes of various kinds (e.g. Microsoft giving money to anyone who uses a new program for a week, etc., etc.). Please, check out your rumors, hoaxes, cute stories, or new viruses at a reputable resource like - Latest Hoaxes - before you pass these things around like a social disease! I have seen some of these things 4 or 5 times before the epidemic ceased. You also might enjoy checking out some of the urban legends that are making the rounds at www.snopes.com - cool site! |
