Name:______Answer Key___________

1.)    The physician asks you to initiate a lidocaine drip on a patient you just resuscitated from cardiac arrest.  You have a vial that contains 1g/5cc of lidocaine and you draw up and inject all 5cc into the bag of fluid.  The physician ordered the patient to receive 2.0 mg/min of lidocaine.  You have a 250 ml bag of normal saline and a 60gtt/ml drip set.

a.       What is your drip rate in gtt/min?  (5 points)

Rate in gtt/min = (2.0 mg/mL)(250 mL)(60 gtt/mL)                    =          30 gtt/min

                                                1000mg

b.      What is your drip rate in ml/hr?  (5 points)

Rate in mL/hr = (30 gtt/min) (60 min/hr)            =          30 mL/hr

                                    60 gtt/mL

Or remember that gtt/min is equal to mL/hr if a 60 gtt/mL administration set is used!!!

c.       What is the concentration of your newly prepared lidocaine drip in mg/ml? (3 points)

Concentration = AA                       Concentration =            1000mg  = 4mg/mL

                          VOH                                                          250 mL

d.      What is the concentration of your newly prepared lidocaine drip in mg/ml? (2 points)

      1,000,000 mcg             =          4000mcg/mL

           250 mL

2.      You start an epinephrine drip at 2mg/min on a bradycardic adult patient.  You have a 500 ml bag of normal saline and 2 mg of epinephrine to mix the drip with providing a 4mg/ml concentration?

a.       Using a 60gtt/ml administration set, what is drip rate in gtt/min in which drip should be infused? (5 points)

Rate in gtt/min               =          (2mcg/min)(500mL)(60gtt/mL) = 30gtt/min

                                                                        2000mcg

b.      If you use a 10 gtt/ml administration set, what would be the new drip rate in gtt/min? (5 points)

Rate in gtt/min               =          (2mcg/min)(500mL)(10gtt/mL) = 5 gtt/min

                                                                        2000mcg

3.      You are ordered to administer a dopamine drip at 12mg/kg/min to an adult female that weighs 100 kg.

a.       Using a 500 cc bag of normal saline in which you added 800 mg of dopamine and a 60 gtt/ml set, what is your infusion rate in gtt/min? (7 points)

Rate in gtt/min               =          (12mcg/kg/min)(100kg)(500 mL)(60gtt/mL)         = 45gtt/mL

                                                                        800 000 mcg

b.      What is the concentration of your drip in mg/ml?  (3 points)

Concentration         =          800 000mcg     =          1,600 mcg/mL

                                            500 mL
