Radiography Program
(5 semesters)

Radiologic Technologists produce diagnostic images of internal structures of the body on x-ray film and/or computer display monitors. Duties include positioning patients for radiologic examinations; determining proper voltage, current, and exposure time for each radiograph; adjusting x-ray equipment; and, assisting radiologists with special procedures and the preparation of contrast media. Radiographers must respect the rights and dignity of individuals and display exceptional interpersonal skills, sensitivity, and tact with ill, injured, and suffering patients.

The Diagnostic Imaging program of Wallace State Community College Hanceville is designed to provide qualified technologists for Diagnostic Imaging departments of hospitals and clinics. Students are taught the fundamental principles underlying all phases of Radiologic Technology. The Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology in collaboration with the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Upon graduation, the student is eligible to apply to take the registry examination of the American Registry of Radiology.

In partnership with Calhoun Community College through the Project AHEAD grant, Wallace State offers their program to students attending our campus. General education course requirements can be taken at Calhoun or any Community College. Wallace State faculty teach all Radiography classes and lectures are available by distance education using the WebCT format. Practical laboratory experiences must be completed on the WSCC campus but are required no more than once weekly. The clinical education component of the program will be scheduled at health care sites in the Calhoun area. Students completing the program receive their Associate of Applied Science degree from WSCC.
