Surgical Technology Program
(3 semesters)

This certificate program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in a rapidly growing technical field. Students gain the knowledge and skills to work as an integral part of the surgical team. Certificates are awarded by Calhoun Community College. Courses are offered by video-teleconference to students at Wallace State, Northwest Shoals and Central Alabama Community Colleges. Students will be required to attend lab weekly on Calhoun's Decatur Campus. The clinical education component of the program will be at clinical sites in the areas close to your base campus.

The Surgical Technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduction of invasive surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist often functions as the sterile member of the surgical team who prepares the sterile setup; passes instruments, medication, and supplies during surgery; and assists the surgeon by holding retractors, sponging or suctioning the operative site, cutting sutures, and applying sterile dressings. Surgical Technologists also may perform the role of the circulator, which is a non-sterile position. The circulator assists the surgical team by safely transporting, positioning, and prepping the surgical patient; obtaining additional instruments, supplies, and equipment while the surgical procedure is in progress, constantly assessing the needs of the patient and the surgical team.

Application Deadline is May 30!
